Fishing, Explained Simply

Fishing is the practice of using a baited hook on a line to catch fish — for food, sport, or just to spend time outside. That's It.

How Much $$?

A complete beginner setup costs $30–$100. A license is usually $20–$60/year.

Do I Need a License?

Most states require it for ages 16+. Kids fish free. Buy online from your state wildlife agency.

What to Bring

Rod & reel, tackle box, bait, water, sunscreen, hat, pliers. That's enough.

Best Time

Early morning and evening are usually the best. Overcast days are great

First Cast

Open bail, hold line with index finger, snap rod forward, release as it goes overhead. That's it.

Common Mistakes

Overfilling reel, leaving knots loose, line too heavy, wrong bait for the fish.

Your Day-One Checklist

Stay Safe Out There

  • Tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.
  • Wear a life jacket if you're near deep, fast, or boat water.
  • Drink water. Wear sunscreen. Bring a hat.
  • In saltwater: shuffle feet in the surf to avoid stingrays.
  • Watch your backcast — make sure no one is behind you.
